Tracks

IES Barcelona is open to all students regardless of language ability. Students are grouped into language proficiency-based tracks that determine course enrolment options and provide a warm sense of community.

Tracks are:

• Beginners


• Intermediate I


• Intermediate II


• Advanced

A track is a group you are assigned to depending on (i) the number of semesters of Spanish you have taken and (ii) the results of the IES Spanish placement test. When you are assigned to a track (students cannot choose a track), we also consider (iii) the last Spanish class you took, as well as (iv) the class you need to receive credit at your home school.

The track system also determines the class choices available to you. Students can take only those classes that suit their level of language proficiency.

Ultimately, academic tracks function as independent programs within IES Barcelona so as to provide a smaller and warmer sense of community, as they ensure:

• Orientation in Spanish or English, depending on your track.


• Separate academic advising for each track.


• Different housing options to better meet the your Spanish language needs. However, IES Barcelona does not provide "English only" housing placements.


• Fieldtrips and extracurricular activities in Spanish or English.
